Two weeks ago the U.S. Department of Justice declared that the Equal Rights Amendment has expired and any vote of ratification is not valid. However, the VA Senate passed the House version of the ERA by a vote of 27-12-1 and the House passed the Senate version of 58-40. If this vote were valid, it would enshrine abortion into the Constitution. This may ultimately have to be decided by the Supreme Court. As Victoria Cobb, President of the Family Foundation has written, "The ERA may sound benign but it's a Trojan horse to accomplish many of the liberal left's ideals."
NOTE: Two bills passed last week - HB 980 and SB 733. These bills remove the requirement that a woman have an ultrasound prior to an abortion and a 24-hour waiting period. In addition, nurses and other staff will be permitted to perform surgical abortions.
